Theodore W. Dunham I

Theodore W. Dunham I was born on 29 Nov. 1876 in New York City to Byard Dunham and Frederica Sodan. Grandpa Dunham is described as being a rough and uneducated man by Jean. At one point, he was a skipper on a steam-engine tugboat in New York Harbor.

(Dad claims before this he was Captain of a square rigger sailing vessel. )

He is listed in the 1920 Census as being a car salesman in Yonkers. According to Jean and TWD III, he loved to sell! Grandpa Dunham with his two boys began in the boat business with the Dunham Sales Company in the 1920-1930 time frame.

A Republican, Grandpa Dunham’s primary interest in life was business and making money. He enjoyed gambling; be it horse’s dogs or cards. He paid little attention to his grandchildren.

He married Ida Kalenberg on 15 Dec. 1899. The 1920 U.S. Census lists the couple as having two children: Ted (born 1900) & Duane (born 1907)and that, by that time, both Ted’s were car salesmen. Every winter the couple visited Florida. Grandpa Dunham died at 81 years of age on 22nd Feb. 1958 in Ft. Lauderdale. He is buried alongside Ida in a mausoleum in Harrison, N.Y.
